Otoplasty corrects protruding or abnormal ears. It can provide great psychological benefit, especially for young children. This surgery is not just for protruding ears. Otoplasty can correct: • Abnormally large earlobes • Lop ear (Pointed ears like Mr. Spock) Shell ear (certain features of a normal ear are missing, such as the curve on the outer edge and other natural folds) Duration In the case of an ear correction, the time necessary for the treatment is approximately 2 hours. Pain The pain is mild. If you are an adult, the procedure can be done under local anesthesia. A child will likely require sedation or general anesthesia. If the patient receives general anesthesia, they may not eat or drink after midnight the night before surgery or the morning of surgery. The last meal the night before should be light. Post-surgical care A bandage will be applied directly after the ear correction to stabilize the new shape of the ear and prevent bleeding. After about 10 days, the bandage is removed and the sutures are removed. A headband should be worn for the next 4 weeks to further stabilize the ear. Job We recommend taking vacations for 1 week. Social activities The patient can usually resume social activities 1 to 2 weeks later. Exercise After 4 weeks.
